Genesis Chapter 3 – Part 1
Hello, friend!
I hope you’ve been enjoying your journey through Genesis. Grab your Bible and settle in with me as we open Chapter 3.
🌿 A Perfect World… Until
Up to this point, everything in the world works perfectly. God’s design runs smoothly, and sin hasn’t entered the picture.
Then Satan shows up, disguised as a serpent, and starts a conversation with Eve.
That moment includes several missteps that allow things to spiral out of control.
🗣️ A Misunderstood Command
God told Adam he could eat from any tree in the garden—except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
If he ate from it, he would die. At that time, Eve hadn’t been created yet, so Adam had the responsibility to pass on God’s command.
When Eve talks with the serpent, we can tell something went wrong in that communication.
She refers to it as “the tree in the middle of the garden” instead of naming it.
She also claims that even touching the tree would lead to death—something God never said.
This tells us either Adam didn’t explain clearly or Eve didn’t listen carefully. That misunderstanding opened the door.
🐍 Temptation Sneaks In
Some Jewish writers suggest Satan pushed Eve against the tree to prove touching it wouldn’t kill her.
Whether that happened or not, the doubt had already taken root.
Instead of resisting, Eve continues the conversation—and Satan moves in with a powerful lie, the same one that caused his own downfall.
“You will be like God…”
—Genesis 3:5
Isaiah 14:12–15 reveals Satan’s desire to become like God. Now he uses that same temptation on Eve.
🍎 Eve Eats—And So Does Adam
Eve gave in. She took the fruit and ate it, then handed some to Adam—and he ate it too.
According to the Moody Bible Commentary, Adam and Eve likely stayed together throughout this event.
That makes me wonder:
- Why didn’t Adam say anything?
- Why didn’t he correct her misunderstanding?
- Why did he let her do it—and then join in?
These questions linger in my mind. But one truth stands firm:
Satan can tempt—but we choose to sin.
The responsibility is ours.
👀 Instant Awareness, Inevitable Consequence
Death didn’t strike them immediately, but it still came.
What followed right away was something unexpected: awareness.
Suddenly, Adam and Eve realized they were naked.
They tried to cover themselves and hide from God.
It sounds silly, doesn’t it? Yet how often do we do the same—trying to hide when we feel shame?
But we can’t hide from God, no matter how hard we try.
✨ A Divine Appearance?
Genesis 3:8 says:
“Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden…”
Many scholars believe this moment reveals a theophany—a physical appearance of the pre-incarnate Jesus.
That idea blows my mind.
Jesus walking the earth before He was born?
John 1:18 supports this interpretation:
“No one has seen the Father but the Son.”
⏸️ So Much More to Come…
This first half of Chapter 3 already reveals so much, and we’ve only scratched the surface.
Let’s pause here for now.
We’ll pick up the rest of the story next time when we meet again in the Nook.
